Kai Moana
Kai Moana (Food from the Sea) is a 6-minute meditative documentary exploring sustainable spearfishing and our relationship with the ocean.
Filmed in the coastal waters of Aotearoa, New Zealand, the film follows a single shore dive—observing the quiet ritual of entering the ocean, searching beneath the kelp, and making the decision to take only what is needed.
This is not a film about conquest or abundance. It's about respect, selectivity, and the understanding that the ocean is both generous and vulnerable. At a time when industrial fisheries deplete marine ecosystems at unsustainable rates, the film offers a quieter alternative—a practice rooted in presence, awareness, and the principle of kaitiakitanga (guardianship).
From the ritual of gear preparation to the intimacy of a shared meal, Kai Moana invites viewers to slow down and witness the full arc of connection between ocean and table—a reminder that food is not just fuel, but a gift worth honoring.
